That is why you build such an excellent product, you take pride in what you do. I am not the player you are or the technician, but I have a good ear for tone – and this is hands down the best sounding amp I have ever heard. Its versatility is perfect – it’s basically three amps in one. This is the last amp I ever need to buy and I can retire my Marshall and may even sell my Badcat.
The tonal ranges of this amp are incredible – I have been playing it all morning in spite of returning home very late Thursday only to find I have no air conditioning in 85 degree weather. This amp is truly superb and has exceeded all my expectations.

Here is some technical feedback – I am currently running it in the 16 ohm position through an open back cabinet w/two Fane Axiom AXA-12 100 watt speakers. The crunch, low end growl and bite you can get out of this combination is fabulous, plus, I cannot believe the clarity and articulation. I think I am going to take the plunge and put four of the same 100 watt Fanes in the cabinet I purchased from you – it will weigh a ton but I am now certain it will sound incredible.

Thank you again and should you wish me to provide you further testimonial, I will be happy to do so. As I had also told you previous, I have already started spreading the word on these amps. Best of luck to you on expanding your business.
I am off today on vacation and just spent the last two hours playing your amp – God I love this thing!!! Blows me away every time. I am going to try and record some ditty this weekend and send it off as I think you will dig the tone. These Fanes have a nice chunky bottom end and show real nice harmonics on the treble side – amazing. And my God – This is the quietest amp I have ever owned – no buzzes or hum – completely quiet while idling. I am super glad you talked me into the 100 watt version too.

Thank you, thank you and thank you…..
G. Herman

4-14-2102 – LS50
my LS 50 M arrived yesterday. It has so much to offer at such a high quality. So many things that are extraordinary about it .It’s the tone I always wanted and never really ended up with, no matter how much I was prepared to spend or how hard I searched. It nails so many things I hear in my head. And “nails it” is the operative word.

The Clean channel is wonderful – Blackface Fenderish that will never break up and betray its’ true character.Other than being a beatiful sounding clean channel, this is also a great pedal platform. The Gain channels are so versatile with such a huge range of overdriven tones. No matter how much Gain I dial in it will clean up with the guitars volume pot – and clean up so beautifully… as a player who depends on using their volume pot to get from dirty to semi dirty to clean, it doesn’t get any better. Classic rock, Metal you name it. It’s all there without compromise.

I’m also very impressed with the EQ section. turning these knobs will actually get some serious results. With the Mids – Highs – and Lows turned down to about 9 o’clock it’s old school classic rock Marshall of the late 60′s early 70′s – step on the extra gain – and it’s the best modified Marshall of the late 60′s and early 70′s…( for reference, I played several Plexis, Metal face Super leads, 3rd Power HD 100 and a Wizard Vintage classic) When I turn the EQ section Up it enters into the JCM 800 territory of the best kind. The extra gain stage is so creamy, bloomy, 3D high gain, that is thick yet so well defined, never fuzzy and always musical. This Extra Gain Stage is the best I heard. Without sacrificing the integrity of the tone it will give you more.

And all of this can be dialed in to actually below conversational room levels with the Master Volume. What’s crazy is that I know that I haven’t even scratched the surface of possibilities with this incredible Tone Monster yet.

Thank you Bill, for this brilliant amp!
Adam

New Landry LS100M AMP Review!

I got my LS100M on Thursday(#3). YAY! This is Bill Landry’s new “Modified” take on his original LS100. It basically has more low mids, more distortion, and more Clean head room. I think the “M” stands for MORE. I waited 5 weeks for it. Man is it a serious amp! I’m typically a low wattage amp player, and this is my first 100watter. But, I must say, the global Master Volume on it is amazing! I have played a lot of nice amps, ones with great MV’s, but I have never seen one like this. It works so well, it works better then my Aracom Pro attenuator. I’m so happy to have those quality cranked tones at levels that don’t split my ears and don’t kill my relationship with my neighbors. Solid Work Bill! SO, Shall I break it down further? My first impression after 3 days of play:

TUBES: My M came with the 6L6′s that Bill recommended to me. 4 6l6′s(100 watts). Yes, 6l6′s sound great! very punchy and crisp. clean ch shines with L6′s. Gain channels sound modern and HiFi, but the amp still has warmth do to the thick mids. I pulled 2 tubes, and ran it at 50 watts. sounded great too. basically same tone with tad softer attack(dont let the word soft fool you).
NOW, I put in EL34′s! I kept it at 50 watts and put in some NOS Mullard XF2 El34′s. Wow, More my tone. Yes, I had to back of the mids on the controller to match up with the warm mids of the 34′s. Wow again! I know the other gents are liking the 6550′s and 6L6′s in this amp, but I personally am loving the 34′s. To me, It adds a little more color and warmth that I love. For now, I will be keeping it at 50 watts with the 34′s. I also changed up all the preamp tubes as well. I put all NOS tubes in except for the Pi. I always use a gold pinned Tungsol in the Pi. Very good modern tube that is linear for the Pi. I also like to use a Telefunken in the clean Ch position.
All my tube changes made a big difference. Made a Killer amp even more musical.
Im playing with quality vintage output humbuckers on a Gibson Les Paul and Gibson SG. 4×12 Mojotone/Marshall Cabinet. Celestion Greenbacks and G12h’s. Mogami & Van Den Hul Cables.
TONE:
Clean Channel- The clean channel is wonderful with lots of headroom. Don’t plan on camping here for dirty tones, this is all about clean. Only gets a tad dirty when cranking the gain knob. Very fendry with it’s own character. I am still bonding with it and still need to tweak some more. Sounds great with my pedals, takes pedals very well. I don’t think its mind blowing, but think its pretty darn good for a 3ch switcher.
Channel 2-Red CH.- Oh ya baby! This is why I bought it. The amp isnt even broken in yet, and it just kills. I like the depth knob at 2 o’clock and the bass at 4 o’clock, and its so bold and beefy with good crunch at lower gains, and chest pounding rhythms at full gain. Tight low end, beefy and articulate at the same time. This is not a high mids very warm marshall tone. This amp has some hot rodded marshallisc tones, but a little darker, and tighter. To me, It’s a hot-rodded Marshall JMP meets VHT meets Boogie. I am a Tool/Adam Jones fan, and even though Adam uses two amps(Marshall & Deisel, {old Tool-Marshall with Boogie}) to get his tone, I think this amp gets close by itself. It’s a very universal amp that covers a lot of range. (That’s what I wanted). I have owned high gain amps that didn’t do dirty overdrive very well. This amp does the full range of over-driven dirty tones. Key word is Overdrive. The amp does overdrive and distortion well. My last high gain amp did gain distortion very well, but when you rolled back the gain knob, it just sounded like weaker high gain tones. Not here. Overdrive and high gain distortion in one box with a flick of a chicken knob. This amp goes from sweet dirt to metal mania. It’s not a Scooped mid metal amp, but the way I here the lower mid bump, I feel that it does metal well. Very open crunchy and beefy……Are my adjectives getting out of hand yet….LOL. I think the tone is well balanced over the tonal spectrum. Not to much of this and not to little of that. and it has the ability to get thicker then a Marshall. While it is darker then the original 100, due to more low mids, it’s still capable of Lots of highs if you still want them.
Channel 3-Yellow Ch: Some amps I have played that have a high gain boost, I feel the boost kinda squashes and compresses the tone too much. I find that the Landry holds onto the note detail even at the highest gain boost setting. No squash here! Freakin awesome gain tones! Im in love. More gain then you will ever need. way more gain then any marshall/marshall clone that I have played. Put your ear plugs in and hold on while you feel it pound you in your chest!
Side Notes:
*Goes to show you how versatile this amp is. Bill loves the 6l6’s and ET-65 speakers. I love the EL34’s with Greenbacks and G12H’s. Neither of us are lying to you. I am running a 4×12 Mojotone/Marshall Cab with 4 greenbacks, and 2M’s & 2H’s mixed. The H’s help the clean channel, but I love the 4 greenies with the tight distortion of this amp. I think this amp will sound great with lots of speakers. Im sure Vintage 30′s will win it too.

*Effects loop. Parallel Looper. Guilty, have not messed with it yet. soon.

*Build Quality. I took the chassis out and took a looksee. Looks well built and well organized. Solid quality parts. Monstrous Tonemaster transformers.
*Very quiet amp! floor noise is the lowest I have yet to experience on a high gain amp. just reeks quality.
*Sustain for days!
*Reverb. Accutronics spring reverb tank. Standard quality spring tank. Almost plate like.
*Master volume. Insane! Worth the price of admission on its own. Rock this monster amp in your bedroom.
*Customer Service: Bill is a sweet man, excellent player, great amp builder, and he will go out of his way to answer questions. He wants happy customers. It’s always a pleasure to talk to Bill.

*My only complaint at this point, there is no indicator light/pilot light to show you that the amp is on when set to the clean channel. Gain channels have small LED lights, but no way to tell the amp is on in clean mode; especially with all that black going on. I have already shared this with Bill, and I am going to add a jewel light next to the standby switch soon. Can only switch channels from the foot pedal. Would love a small toggle on the amp itself to channel switch as well.

If you like high gain amps, you really should give this one a try. It is addictive to play and feels fast and free. I’m really enjoying this amp, and I am glad I took the chance on it. If you want a Marshall clone, look else where. If you want a better Marshall inspired, highly universal amp, that has quality and influential tones, going from clean to organized insanity, and stands on its own, this is it. This one is not for your sister. This amp has some serious ballz!

I’m just totally blown away by how great of an amp you’ve made for me! You’ve created something truly special here. It’s exceeded my expectations by far, which were very high to begin with based on your amazing posted audio clips and videos, written reviews from trade shows and users, and my conversations and emails with you.

When I first decided to buy a LS50 from you, I expected that it would remedy my clean channel (or lack there of) problems with my favored JCM800s. Well, that it did, and did it fantastically for sure! The clean channel can stay clean, even with all the raunchy bark of a Les Paul’s PAF raised close to the strings pushing the amp’s front end. If the clean channel is pushed to break up, it does so in such a sweet way, first with some beautiful and articulate clean compression, then some subtle hints of slight tube saturation but all the while staying glassy and chime like with absolutely perfect definition and dynamics.

What I didn’t count on was that the dirty channel would blow my mind. I can’t quite say in words what it does for me, but it’s unlike any other amp I’ve played. You’re posted clips, great as they are, just can’t convey the feel of actually playing your fantastic design. It really interacts with my guitar and my playing in such a satisfying way. Every note is magic. Amps that do that are rare. Amps that do that and cover all the other ground that your LS50 does don’t exist. I’ve never played an amp that has such a defined attack with great note separation and clarity, but still has the smooth British ring-out, sustain and the overall feel that I love in well driven amplifier presented in such a great way.

Though I’ve only had this amp a short time now, I’m finding that the second footswitchable gain control is something I don’t think I’ll ever want to live without. It’s so much better than any front end boost or overdrive that tries to preserve the original sound of the amp, but with more gain. It IS the original amp with more gain, and plenty more gain available too! Perfect!

The frequencies and contours of the EQ on the dirty channel at first felt odd to me, but quickly I’m coming to appreciate them. It’s not a Marshall tone stack (I don’t think, at least) and that’s what I’m accustomed to so the EQ felt strange at first, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that it’s an improvement over the Marshall EQs. I find it has more precise control within the sweet spots and less of the unusable (fizzy and flubby) range of the Marshall design. I’m not completely used to it yet, but I could see it becoming something I very much miss when I fire up a UK amp. I’m also finding that the response of the EQ is very dependent on the level of the channel volume versus the master volume and with a little tweaking of both I can pull some very diverse tones from the amplifier. Fantastic!

As for the optional poweramp section lead boost you installed for me, I’m finding that the level is about dead on. Every song and mix is different, of course, but I like where it sits as it is. It’s just enough of a boost to push a lead right to the top of a mix, but not over the top. Nobody turns their heads dramatically when I hit it, they just hear me clearly. I think you nailed it just right. I would encourage any other customer to take advantage of this extremely usable and fairly priced option.

My only suggestions for improvement would be to have both the channel selection and boost switches on the same pedal and multi-pin cable (if it becomes a standard feature) and that you notify your customers that the footswitch must be connected in order for the amp to fire up. I almost had a heart attack when I turned on the power to warm up the amp with the footswitch still in my pedal case and nothing happened. I checked the fuse and my power socket with a meter before I realized I just needed to connect the footswitch. Phew!

Overall, my original thought was that this amp would provide all the clean sounds and the occasional lead or rhythm in my live setup and on the album my current band is in the process of tracking now. Now that I’ve used it a bit and instantly fallen in love with it, I expect that it will probably take the duty of many of the rhythms and leads on the album and most likely be the only amp I take out live besides the backup. I can’t thank you enough for creating this design, building it so well, and being so patient while answering all of my (many) questions. It’s an absolute pleasure to do business with you and I assure you I’ll recommend you at every opportunity. Of course, your amp really sells itself. I’m confident that my serial number 3 LS50 will be a rare gem one day when your company takes off like a rocket. I can’t think of anything I would have wanted done differently in the amp or the transaction itself. Design, build quality and construction (yes, I peeked inside at all your beautifully laid out pushback wire and quality components, I couldn’t help myself!), build time, packaging and shipping, communication, customization, obvious concern for the customer’s satisfaction and follow through… all perfect. You’ve raised the bar for all other builders. Thank you.

Most sincerely,
James Finnerty

I was fortunate enough to come across an absolute killer sounding ’78 Marshall JMP Master Volume a couple of years ago after going through many JMP’s on my extensive search for “The One”.

It’s been the benchmark for which I judge all others.
I could make a list, but trust me, I have run through the gamut of boutique amps in the Marshally vein, and non, IMHO even came close to the tone I get from my JMP.

Kudos to Bill Landry for building a great take on old school Marshall goodness.
It is the first, and only, boutique amp that can holds it ground against my tone monster JMP, and honestly after many hours of A/Bing the two, I’m having a bit of trouble saying the JMP sounds better.
Maybe for my tastes it does (but I’m cutting hairs), let’s just say neither sounds “better”, just slightly different in voicing and feel.

If late 70′s to early 80′s Marshall tone is what your after with more versatility, I highly recommend you give the Landry a listen.

MAY 11, 2009 – NY AMP SHOW COMMENT

I met bill at the ny amp show, super nice guy.the show started at 10 am at 10:05 I walked into bills room pluged in to his 50 watt head, and for me the show was over right then.I have spent over a grand alone on a decent pedal board and effects trying to get the sounds that my ears seem to like, this amp just floored me,it would be a disservice to this amp to put any pedals in front of it.no need. at the flip of a switch this thing just delivers all the tone and mojo you could ask for out of amp.I will be ordering one soon. thank you bill-jimmy gondoli

I’ll have to echo all of the Sarge’s comments.

To put it simply, a great amp made by a PLAYER and a gentleman. The luck of geography played a role in being able to try one of these out …. a more glorious 100 watt head/ 4×12 cab tone I have not heard. This thing is a punchy bastard as well on the clean tones, and does Phenomenally well on the in-between tones also. Where it shines is in that cranked Marshall/EVH realm…. dial back your guitar’s volume to tame it or step on the pedal to switch channels. Full, articulate, ballsy, versatile. What more could anyone want?

Man, Bill… I’ve been playing this darn amp and I think you totally have a winner on your hands. This is a crappy economy and even moving used gear is hard right now. So this probably isn’t the best time to start selling high dollar amps, but wow. I’m totally digging it and I think you’ll experience some great success if you can keep going until people start spending money again.

You probably saw where I mentioned an amp I owned in the past that sounded like the “perfect plexi.” I don’t know if you know much about that particular make/model, but the amp is basically a PTP design that was meant to capture the old “brown sound.” It was one of the best rock tones I ever had, but it was a little impractical with the lack of a master volume, effects loop, reverb, EQ controls that didn’t do much, etc… It also didn’t have enough low end for me (although it was enough for the brown sound.) It was all PTP and just killer…

I mention that because your amp reminds me of it, but at a higher level. I am nailing the brown sound in the same way that amp did, but now I have ALOT more versatility. I’m getting these tones at bedroom volumes without an attenuator!!! It’s crazy!

So when people ask me to describe your amp, I say it’s a super versatile plexi-style machine. It goes from warm organic clean tones, to sweet blues crunch, to a “perfect plexi”, to modded high gain british crunch at the stomp of a switch. All of that with killer sounding reverb and at low volumes! I’m going crazy with this tone. Thank you!
